Scorched 3D 42.1

Scorched 3D is a game based loosely (or actually quite heavily now) on the classic DOS game Scorched Earth "The Mother Of All Games". Scorched 3D adds amongst other new features a 3D island environment and LAN and Internet play. Scorched 3D is totally free and is available for both Microsoft Windows and Unix (Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, Solaris, etc.) operating systems. You can pick up the game and begin playing very quickly. Then, when/if you are interested, you can poke in the dimmer recesses of the game and get into the strategy (or just ignore it altogether!).
At its lowest level, Scorched 3D is just an artillery game with two+ tanks taking turns to destroy opponents in an arena. Choose the angle, direction and power of each shot, launch your weapon, and try to blow up other tanks. That´s basically it. But Scorched 3D can be a lot more complex than that, if you want it to be. You can earn money from successful battles and use it to invest in additional weapons and accessories. You can play with up to twenty four other players at a time, mixing computer players with humans. There´s a variety of changing environmental conditions and terrains to be dealt with. After the end of each round (which ends when everybody dies or there´s only one person left), you get to buy stuff using the prize money you won from previous matches.

My worst Day WW2 is a 3D First Person Shooter
game. It is February 1944, German troops still
occupy most of Europe.
As a saboteur you are sent into Norway, to
destroy two large canons. This game will
introduce you to a new way of playing a 3D
First Person Shooter game. The story is perhaps
not that unique, it is World War II, and you
are a saboteur put on the middle of a large
island, your main target is to destroy two big
German canons, which are a part of the German
coastal defence in occupied Norway.
But here the comparison with a standard war
game stops.
You are not sent out on 10 or 15 standard
linear, scripted missions. No, it is more like
a real military mission: You are sent into the
enemy territory without knowing too much about
where the enemies are, and what they are up to.
The intelligence is sparse, close to none.
And you will see that you have to find out
what is the biggest threat, and start your
"mission" from there. To put it simple, you
have to kill many enemies on the island to be
sure of success, and to be able to leave the
island.
If you play for increasing your score, you can
try to hunt down most of the soldiers on the
island.

Canopy Glide 1.2.863.0

 

Canopy Glide is designed to emphasize the change in the canopy glide. This is best observed when canopy inputs on the right and left are applied together. You use the mouse to control both toggles simultaneously. The simulation responds to the mouse input as the canopy would respond to the toggle input. This means that if you move the mouse slowly, the canopy pitch does not change, but the velocity of the canopy changes. On the other hand, if you move the mouse quickly the canopy can be flared. The change of canopy speed depends on the canopy size, the jumper's weight, applied input (even density of the air is used in the mathematical model). Right mouse button click switches between different inputs: toggles, front risers, rear risers. This allows to see that flare is not possible with the front risers, but it is possible with the rear risers. You can see that applying front risers will increase the speed of the canopy and if the front risers are abruptly dropped, then the canopy starts leveling out. On the other hand, if toggles are abruptly released, then the canopy surges forward and it is not possible to stop the surge quickly, hence it is not advisable to let go of the toggles if the final flare is a little high.
You can switch between side view and first person view by pressing a button (views can be switched back and forth at any time). Side view allows you to understand what happens to the canopy in relation to the ground (it takes some time to understand that swinging under the canopy forward and back is called change in pitch, and too quick of the input will create a forward swing). First person view allows you to see the environment as you will see it from under the canopy (use the mouse to look around as in a computer game, when the left button is pressed you can move the mouse up and down to control toggles or risers). For example, this is useful to realize that looking at the horizon for landing flare is better than looking straight down. Also, you can learn how to find the destination point.
After the landing you can compare trajectories from different jumps, which demonstrates how the canopy glide changes in different wind conditions or with different inputs. All of the described phenomena are usually shown to the students using a few drawings in books, an occasional video, but mostly using fingers and verbal descriptions from the instructor. Simulation allows you to change parameters and see if you understand the underlying principles. The simulation demonstrates, for example, why it is dangerous to fly in high winds or how speed of the flare must be changed depending on the speed of the wind. There is no other similar tool available to students or instructors.
